Resolving a mothers anguish
Ruqaya (pronounced Roo-Kai-Yah) feared for her daughter Kawthar, who had stopped growing and was becoming dangerously weak. Living in a refugee camp in Jordan, Ruqaya had no money for medical care and was struggling to feed her family. When a free medical clinic opened nearby, Ruqaya arrived as soon as the doors opened—alongside more than 60 other mothers in the first hour alone.
Volunteer doctors quickly saw how serious Kawthar’s condition was: chronic anaemia requiring special milk and close monitoring. Ruqaya could not afford the treatment, but Christian World Service’s partner, the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees (DSPR), stepped in immediately and provided the milk Kawthar needed. This was possible due to generous donations made from New Zealand supporters of CWS to DSPR specifically for the purpose of helping refugee mothers and their children with medical and health issues.
By the end of the first day, the clinic had supported 357 women and children, distributing baby kits, essential medicines, and supplements to families who had gone without healthcare for far too long. For Ruqaya and Kawthar, this simple act of care marked the beginning of renewed strength, hope, and the chance for a healthier future
